Giuseppe Verdi: La traviata

Giuseppe Verdi: La traviata

Opera in three acts in Italian language

Verdi proved to be a very modern music dramatist using only five years old novel, written by Alexander Dumas the younger La dame aux Camélias, as a basis for the libretto, the novel about Marie Duplessis, the famous courtesan and idol of the Parisian society in the 40s of the 19th century. To depict a courtesan as a positive theatre character was unacceptable in those days and Verdi was confronted with the stuffy refusal of the society. However, the melodies in this opera perfectly reflect and strengthen the content of the novel that was celebrated shortly after its failed premiere.
